Knowing What To Expect at Your First Gynecology Visit

Whether you’re a teenager or an adult, the first visit to a gynecologist can be intimidating. With such intimate things being discussed and checked, it can feel embarrassing.

It’s important to understand that women’s health is essential, and you deserve to live the healthiest life possible. To help make this happen, the medical team in Houston, TX, shares what you can expect on your first visit to ease your worries.

  • You’ll Receive a General Health Check Up

Gynecologists do specialize in sexual concerns and “private” matters. However, they are also committed to your general health and wellness. You’ll receive a general checkup, which will include taking your vital signs, checking your blood pressure, getting your height and weight, and more that you obtain from your primary physician.

  • Expect More Talking Than Anything Else

Usually, the first visit doesn’t involve exams or tests. Instead, it will be time for your doctor to get to know you, your needs, concerns, lifestyle factors, and more.

Some topics of discussion will include discussing when you first started your period, when you had your last period, and whether you are sexually active. These questions aren’t judgmental or embarrassing. Instead, the answers factor into your general health and needs.

The doctor may also ask about birth control, any pain, how bad your cramps are, and other private matters. You will typically be asked about things like your energy levels, how well you sleep, whether you feel anxious or depressed, and more. If you are a teenager, you can speak privately to your doctor without a parent in the room.

  • Exams and Other Steps

Again, most first visits do not involve any exams unless there is a need for one. For example, you might receive an STI screening if you show specific symptoms or a pelvic exam if you experience pain. Otherwise, any necessary exams are scheduled for a later date.

Unless there is a reason to do so earlier, pelvic exams and pap smears will not be performed until age 21. If you are sexually active, your doctor can prescribe birth control, even if you don’t have an exam.
